Erin Kennedy opens Worcestershire Breast Unit Extension

It was an incredible honour to welcome Erin Kennedy MBE, Team GB gold medal winning rower and recent breast cancer patient to the Worcestershire Breast Unit on 17th January to officially open our new extension.

Special moments indeed – thank you to all who attended, our WBUH volunteers, and of course Erin. 💕

Huge Thanks to Worcester News for covering our story:

THE new breast imaging extension to the Worcestershire Breast Unit at Worcestershire Royal Hospital was officially opened by Erin Kennedy MBE.

NHS teams and VIP guests across the field of breast imaging in the United Kingdom attended to see Erin declare the extension open.

The extension was built in 2021, coming into use in 2022, creating a new base for Worcestershire and Herefordshire’s breast screening service.

In addition, in conjunction with the new Alexandra Hospital Breast Unit, this state-of-the-art training centre has ensured a bright future for development of breast services across the county.

The extension was funded in part by the Worcestershire Breast Unit Haven charity, which operates out of the Worcestershire Breast Unit, in part by the Kildare Trust and in part by the NHS.

The project included the installation of three state-of-the-art ultrasound and mammogram machines plus new waiting areas, a counselling room and a much-needed staff room.

New office facilities for the essential breast service administrative staff are also provided within the unit.

Dr Penny Haggett, consultant radiologist who led the extension project, said: “The Worcestershire Breast Unit was already a highly-regarded centre nationally but, by incorporating our skilled imaging team into the new extended unit, the Worcestershire Breast Service provides patients with healthcare of the highest quality.

“In addition, the new extension facilitates training of healthcare professionals who are nationally in demand, whilst also providing a pleasant and supportive working environment for our current wonderful staff.

“We are in a truly enviable position.”
